ABOUT
Born and raised in the Scottish Borders, I found my roots nestled in an area rich with rolling hills, lush forests, and tranquil lochs. These natural wonders served as my playground and my classroom, where I accompanied my father on wildlife explorations. Equipped with his camera, he introduced me to the diverse tapestry of nature, igniting a fascination that would shape my life. I immersed myself in books on birds and mammals, captivated by vibrant illustrations and photographs of creatures like the Kingfisher, Waxwing, and Magpie—each one seeming to transport me to distant realms.
My journey into photography emerged later in my life during my time in the British Army. It was there that I first held the Nikon D200, coupled with a 600mm prime lens. Pointing this substantial piece of equipment at a distant Robin marked a pivotal moment—an instant that ignited a profound passion within me. Over 14 years, I served as an Army Photographer, capturing a wide array of subjects from military personnel and equipment to combat scenes and public relations events. Despite this varied portfolio, it was wildlife photography that continually resonated most deeply with me.
With a foundation built on press standards, I developed an ethos focused on achieving the perfect shot in-camera, minimising the necessity for extensive edits. This commitment to authenticity extends to my post-processing, employing traditional darkroom techniques and steering clear of sky replacements or AI-generated backgrounds. My work represents a steadfast dedication to genuine wildlife imagery.
Additionally, my military training provided invaluable experiences in videography, which opened doors to opportunities beyond my imagination. One landmark experience was working alongside the esteemed wildlife photographer Andy Rouse as a safari guide in Africa and India. This mentorship not only broadened my understanding of the professional wildlife photography landscape but also refined my skills in guiding tours—an experience for which I carry immense gratitude.
